Wastewater Laboratory for High School Students

Laboratory Materials

The Sewer Science curriculum has been created as an educational outreach tool for wastewater treatment plants or educational organizations.  Our equipment is currently available to schools in our service area. However, other agencies are building their own lab kits and loaning them to high school teachers in their service areas.

The lab kits include model sedimentation tanks, aeration basins, filtration units and all equipment and chemicals needed to make water quality measurements.

A complete Sewer Science kit includes:
  • Sedimentation Tanks (6-8)
  • Aeration Tanks (6-8)
  • Filters (1-2)
  • Pumps (6-8)
  • Ammonia Test Kits for Ammonia, Chemical Oxygen Demand, pH and Turbidity
  • Clamps, tubing, test-tube racks, pipette with disposable tips
  • Nitrate Test Kit (optional)
  • Dissolved Oxygen Test Kit (optional)
  • Grocery Items for Simulating Wastewater
  • Disposable Gloves
  • Chemicals Including Ammonia, Bleach, and Aluminum Sulfate
  • A student workbook. Agencies are encouraged to design their own workbook cover and insert a schematic of their treatment operation.
  • The entire kit is packaged into 10 - 12 labeled containers

The kit costs are dependent on the number of treatment units needed and the water quality parameters of interest

Teacher training sessions or in-class assistance should be provided by wastewater agency staff.
