Oil and antifreeze leaks on the ground are washed into storm drains, creeks, and the Bay during rainstorms. Degreasers and soaps — even biodegradable brands — contain chemicals harmful to fish.

Be a good neighbor

Have your vehicle regularly inspected and maintained at a Clean Bay Auto Shop (pdf). Get all leaks repaired promptly.
If you maintain your vehicle yourself, capture the vehicle fluids and any leaks or spills with other household hazardous wastes.
Recycle used motor oil, antifreeze, and brake fluid along with other household hazardous wastes.
Use a commercial car wash. Dirty water from the car wash will be treated before being discharged into the Bay. If you must wash your car at home, wash it on a grassy or dirt surface to keep dirty water from flowing into a gutter or storm drain. Empty your bucket of soapy water into a sink or toilet.
Give your car a break and stretch your legs. Walk, ride your bike, or use public transportation.
